Tegid scoops double from Llangollen International Eisteddfod

A talented vocalist added to his impressive list of accolades with double success at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

Tegid Goodman-Jones, a Year 10 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, came away with two victories from events at the world-renowned showcase, further enhancing his reputation as one of the brightest young voices anywhere in the country.

The Music scholar began a memorable week by taking home the Vocal Classical Solo in the 12-16 category for his stunning modern rendition of Ava Maria, which is the second year in succession that Tegid has scooped this particular award.

A total of 11 soloists from Hong Kong, Wales, England, Singapore, India and the United States took part, and this was followed by another sensational display of vocal prowess in the Open Vocal Folk Solo category, where the 15-year-old produced two outstanding performances to claim the prize.

This included a sombre song about the Cuckoo, and a contrasting humorous song in the style of a dialogue between a man and the fair maiden, giving Tegid the title that narrowly evaded him at last year’s event when he finished in second place.

The pupil was interviewed by S4C following his success, and his performances were also shown live on the Welsh TV channel.

It has been another exceptional year littered with achievements for Tegid, who continues to thrive in a wide range of areas of Rydal Penrhos life thanks to his hard work under the expert support of staff.

He said: “I had a wonderful time competing in Llangollen International Eisteddfod. Met some great people from diverse cultures and it was interesting to hear them sing in their own styles.

“It was delightful to have Rhiannon Pritchard, the wife of the composer, accompanying me so beautifully. I also happened to come away with two wins, and I want to thank Elisabeth Pierce Jones, my patient teacher. For my journey in a short space of time, with the folk song competition.”
