A pair of talented sailors at Rydal Penrhos have been rewarded for their exceptional recent performances with an invitation on to a prestigious programme.
Ewan Luke and Zac Blomeley, Year 11 pupils at the school, have been selected to train with Great Britain head coaches and 49er/FX sailors at the 29er class invitational squad training.
The call-up comes after the duo impressed considerably at the Harken Winter Championships, where they finished second junior and tenth overall despite their relative inexperience in the 29er class.
After five months of competing at this level, they are now ranked 16th in the UK Open Age rankings after a number of eye-catching performances in their new discipline.
The training programme will kick-off at Hayling Island Sailing Club on February 25-26, and it has been put in place to lend support to more experience sailors prior to a potential call-up to the RYA National Youth squad.
It will take place over five weekends this winter and spring under the stewardship of head coach Niall Myant and his team, which includes a number of 49er Podium Squad sailors and past 29er champions.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This is yet more fantastic news for Ewan and Zac, who are quickly establishing themselves as one of the best pairs in the entire country on the water.
“Getting training such as this will be invaluable to their development, and it is sure to motivate them further as they continue to pursue national success.
“They are thoroughly deserving of their invitation and we wish them well at the squad training.”
