A young Preparatory School sailor has been making waves as part of a regional squad over the winter.
Ellie Knight, a Year 5 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, was selected to the Royal Yachting Association’s North Wales Regional Optimist squad for the second consecutive year, and she has been taking part in a series of out-of-season training sessions to further hone her skills ahead of a busy series of competitions in the coming months.
The Welsh National & Regional Squad Programme supports around 140 talented sailors from Wales and is a proven pathway for young sailors to follow into GBR, Olympic and Olympic Development Squads.
It has been a memorable year on the water for Ellie, who recently scooped the Novice Sailor of the Year accolade at the school’s annual Sailing Awards Dinner last year after showing enormous commitment to improvement under the guidance of Rydal Penrhos’ dedicated coaching staff led by former pupil Max Todd.
She also completed a gruelling 2,500 metre swimming challenge (100 lengths) in under an hour and has secured a plethora of Karate grading triumphs to add to her outstanding development academically.
Prep School Head Alison Hind, said: “Ellie is such a hard-working child who is maximising both her enjoyment and progression in every opportunity that is afforded to her, which is something that typifies all of our Prep School pupils.
“She has taken to her sailing incredibly well and this experience with the RYA coaching staff is sure to stand her in good stead ahead of what promises to be a busy summer.”
