Rugby: Dion, Danny, Sam and Efan help RGC secure memorable Newport win

A number of former Rugby Academy stars helped RGC secure their most impressive victory of the season at Newport last weekend.

Dion Jones, Danny Cross, Sam Jones and Efan Jones all started for the Gogs in their Principality Premiership clash, where they managed to emerge from Rodney Parade with a memorable 28-25 success despite having 14 men for 65 minutes.

The home side came out of the block flying and gained the upper hand early on when Andy Evans crossed the white wash, and things looked even worse soon after when Robin Williams was shown a red card after 15 minutes.

This brought the best out of RGC for the remainder of the contest, and they posted their first score when Harri Evans demonstrated his trademark pace to latch on to a Billy McBryde kick for the touch down. McBryde added the extras.

A Matt O’Brien penalty enabled the home side to regain the advantage, but this joy proved to be short-lived as Sam Jones produced an outstanding run down the flank to go over in the corner following the restart. McBryde was successful with the conversion attempt.

After the interval saw the hosts get themselves back into the tie on 42 minutes when Chay Smith powered over from close range, and they came close to adding to their tally in the opening exchanges of the half but the Gogs’ rearguard held firm.

This proved to be telling as a quick break from the visitors saw Iolo Evans dive over, and Harri Evans pulled RGC further clear when he notched his second of the contest after superb approach play from Jones.

McBryde despatched both conversion attempts, but ill-discipline saw Port reduce the deficit through a penalty try that also saw RGC reduced to 13 when Will Sanderson was sin-binned.

Kyle Taylor also scored late on for the home side, but O’Brien crucially missed the conversion as Jones’ side dug deep in the closing stages for a famous triumph.
