Rugby: Cieran helps North East Wales squad to runners-up in national championships

A Preparatory School rugby star performed well for a regional squad in a high-profile national final recently.

Cieran Milligan, a Year 6 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, formed part of the North East Wales Schools’ U11 side that took on Rhymney Valley in the Welsh U11 Championships at Llanidloes Rugby Club late last month.

The Prep School rugby captain played a major role in a pulsating final contest that saw both sides trade the lead throughout, with the Valley eventually emerging victorious at the death.

This ensured the North East Wales squad were crowned runners-up in the competition, which represents a significant achievement and the highest finish the set-up has achieved in the last 20 years.

They booked their place in the showcase with a 5-3 victory over Newport in their semi-final clash, which saw the group dig deep to produce another rousing display.

This is the latest in a long line of achievements for Cieran, who also played a significant part in the squad’s rise to prominence throughout the competition to date.

He also skippered the Prep School to their fifth straight Cooper Cup victory against Colwyn Bay to further enhance his growing reputation.

Head of Boys’ Games Jamie McLeod, said: “Cieran deserves an enormous amount of credit for his contribution to the North East Wales Schools’ U11 squad over the season, and this further highlights just how much potential he has within the sport.

“This is matched by his improving leadership and his overall desire to improve with every session and competitive fixture.”
