Pupil Profiles: Niamh C

In the lead-up to our Open Morning events in April, we will be taking a look at the pupils that make Rydal Penrhos such a fantastic place to live and learn.

The latest Senior School pupil under the spotlight is Niamh Cook:

  • Name: Niamh Cook
  • Year group: Year 11
  • Pupil status: Day
  • House: Payne

Having natural talent is one thing, but utilising it to its fullest and developing it is something different altogether.

Niamh is not only nurturing his immense musical gift, but is also progressing significantly thanks to the work she is putting in with Director of Music Pete Williams and the other staff situated throughout Rydal Penrhos.

The Year 10 pupil, who joined the Rydal Penrhos community in 2005 at the Prep School’s Reception class, recently sat her Grade 8 piano exam administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and the 15-year-old scored an incredible 130 for her efforts.

This score ensured that Niamh achieved a distinction, which represents a significant achievement for someone so young.

In addition to this triumph, the multi-talented musician achieved the same score of 130 in her Grade Six Clarinet from the ABRSM, which secured yet another Distinction to add to her collection.

She was also the recipient of a special grant from the Sir John Henry Morris Jones Trust, which was set up in 1975 at the request of the former MP and GP’s will, with young people under the age of 19 from the Colwyn area invited to apply.

Niamh also contributes significantly to the wealth of concerts put on by the school throughout the academic year, which gives each pupil at platform to perform in front of an audience and improve confidence.

The pupil produced an absolutely spellbinding solo piano effort at the Intermediate Inter-House competition that earned her third place representing Payne, while Niamh is also thriving academically in a number of different areas.

Rydal Penrhos will be holding Senior and Prep Open Morning events on Friday, April 26 and Saturday 27 from 9.30am, and to book your place contact Admissions Officer Jenny Marsden on 01492 530155 or email admissions@rydalpenrhos.com.
