A host of Preparatory School sports teams kicked off their respective seasons with impressive results.
Rydal Penrhos’ netball and rugby set the tone for the campaign ahead with notable performances against Abbey Gate College on Tuesday, January 17.
Big things are expected of the U11 rugby side this season, and they started off on the right foot with a convincing 59-14 win over the visitors.
The home side began well and scored early on when talented fly half George Watkins crossed the white wash, and further tries arrived in the first period courtesy of Year 5 pupil Liam Farrell, Jonathan Osbourne and Llion Morris.
Stout defensive work from Laurence Richardson and Matthew Stubbins allowed Rydal Penrhos to go into the interval with a commanding 40-0 advantage.
The away side improved in after the break and were rewarded with two tries in quick succession, but the hosts were not to be denied and responded well with three more scores to round off a positive first game.
There was no such for the U8 side, who put up a valiant effort before narrowly losing 7-6 despite impressive showings from the likes of Archie Jeeves and Will Glanville.
The U11 netball side also began the season in fine style with a 14-9 success over Abbey Gate.
Martha Hind turned in a player-of-the-match performance which was the catalyst behind the victory, with Eve Durrans, Ariana Milligan, Lily Davies and Eleanor Tunstall also catching the eye.
Grace Watkins, Tori Maddocks and Fleur Pierce, together with player-of-the-match Chloe Tillman-Lennon, were unable to prevent a 6-3 loss for the U9 side despite an encouraging effort.
