Last weekend saw the annual Colwyn Bay Forties Festival taking place in and around the streets of the town centre.

Unfortunately, Storm Hannah put a dampener on Saturday’s events but the highlight of an otherwise subdued day was undoubtedly the Ballroom Blitz Dance, held in the Memorial Hall at Rydal Penrhos School.

With the walls decorated with patriotic bunting and posters reminding guests to carry their gas masks, the atmosphere of the 1940s was recreated with a live performance by the Llandudno Swing Band, playing the greatest hits of the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey bands.

The guests dressed in period costumes and the dance floor was rarely empty all evening as they waltzed and jived to the swing music of the era.

Two pupils from Rydal Penrhos are members of the Llandudno Swing Band. Miles Poller (alto sax) and Richard Wolfendale (guitar) are both studying music at the school and greatly enjoy being part of this community band, which aims to recreate the authentic sounds of the great swing bands.

Director of Music Pete Williams, said: “Miles and Richard are two extremely talented musicians and they are developing their craft considerably both at school and with their involvement in the Llandudno Swing Band.

“The Colwyn Bay Forties Festival is one of the most prominent dates on the community calendar, and we were thrilled to host the Ballroom Blitz Dance and assist in any way we could.”
