Head of Hockey Phil Mather brings you the latest rundown of action at Rydal Penrhos, which features encouraging performances from both the U14 and U12 sides:
The U14 team played against Wirral Grammar School with neither side really threatening their opponent’s goal in the first half due to lack of accuracy and energy, hence the 0 – 0 score line at the interval.
As the second half got underway there was an immediate increase in tempo with the players from both sides which resulted in playing slightly wider.
More frequent scoring opportunities for the home side were created and it was the strength and organisation of our defence, well led by Jasper Richardson who prevented them from scoring.
Unfortunately in attack we failed to get enough threatening shots into the D and on target which caused too few problems for the home defence.
The second half was certainly more structured, tactically sound and exciting with end to end play on several occasions but neither side took advantage which resulted in a 0 – 0 score line at the finish.
A really fine game for the U12 team against King’s Chester, particularly from those returning from the tour who quickly got into their stride.
Josh Stewart scored two good goals and Niall Richardson was heroic with a number of fine saves.
Having been two-nil down, we played some attractive hockey to draw level before eventually falling to a 2-4 defeat.
