Hockey: Young RP stars claim regional tournament win

A young group of talented Hockey stars turned in a fabulous effort to emerge victorious from a regional competition.

Gracie Tavernor, Ellie Knight, Lily Copeland, Freddie MacLaverty, Fleur Roberts, Freya Berklay and Eloise Brown formed one of two Rydal Penrhos Prep School sides that competed in the round-robin event on Sunday, September 23.

They began the tournament with a creditable draw against the Rydal Penrhos A team consisting of Year 6 pupils, before securing another draw against nearby Colwyn Bay Hockey Club.

This left them with a winner-takes-all clash with pre-competition favourites Bangor Hockey Club, and a sensational effort saw them secure a resounding 7-1 success to be crowned overall winners.

Freddie was the star of the show in their final contest, hitting no fewer than five goals to lead his side to glory, with Lily also contributing significantly to their triumph with a brace.

The tournament was organised by Head of Girls’ Game Jude Pyves, together with her daughter, and was held at the school’s Astro Turf facility.

Prep School Head Alison Hind, said: “This represents a considerable achievement for our young Rydal Penrhos squad, who produced a determined display full of quality to come away from the competition with a fine victory.

“It was great to see the older members of the team supporting and motivating their younger peers throughout the tournament, and congratulations go to all for their respective performances and to Mrs Pyves for organising such a fantastic event.”
