A young Girls’ Hockey team at Rydal Penrhos continued their exceptional recent development with a fine performance at a high-profile tournament.
The school’s U13A side travelled to Jodrell Bank to compete at the Terra Nova competition, which saw them take part in a round-robin event against other schools from across Cheshire and the North West.
They began the gruelling tournament in impressive fashion after taking an early lead against Foremarke (Repton College), where the Rydal Penrhos side took an early lead before being pegged back in the final minute in a 1-1 draw.
This was followed by a narrow 1-0 reverse to eventual winners Moreton Hall, before claiming a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw with Terra Nova despite racing to a three-goal advantage in the opening exchanges.
Their first win of the tournament came against Litchfield School before a loss to Ellesmere College, but the Rydal Penrhos squad finished the competition on a high note to come away with a convincing 3-0 triumph against Yarlet School.
After the final scores were tallied, the team of Caitriona Searl, Bea Gardener, Jasmin Beckett-Donald, Ella Northcott, Ella James, Eve Durrans, Ariana Milligan, Lily Davies and Martha Hind secured a third placed finish as a result of their outstanding efforts throughout the day.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This was a very encouraging performance from our U13A Girls’ Hockey side, who have all benefitted significantly from a specialist coaching programme during the initial stages of the academic year under the guidance of our new Head of Hockey Dominic Maguire.
“It was also great to see Year 7 pupils Jasmin and Ella playing above their age level and really contributing to the team’s overall success, and all this bodes well for their overall development in the weeks and months ahead.”
