A group of Preparatory School footballers have been praised for their performances at a regional tournament recently.
The Rydal Penrhos side, which consisted of pupils from Year 5 and 6, travelled to Ellesmere College to compete at a U11 competition featuring a number of other schools from across the North West.
The team got off to an impressive start by securing a 3-0 win over Moreton Hall, which featured a hat-trick from the talented Biv Gilmartin, who is also a member of the Llandudno FC Academy programme, together with some superb goalkeeping from Liam Farrell.
This trend continued throughout the group stages, thanks in no small part to the standout efforts put in by Gilmartin, skipper James Gilman and Henry Hibbert.
Another to catch the eye was Year 5 pupil Zack Coverley as they managed to book their place in the final four.
A tense affair in their semi-final against Shrewsbury School finished goalless after the allotted time, with the Rydal Penrhos squad suffering an agonising golden goal defeat in their efforts to reach the final.
They eventually secured fourth spot from the tournament after being on the wrong end of a penalty shootout defeat in the third/fourth place playoff.
Head of Boys’ Games Jamie McLeod, said: “This was a very encouraging effort from the group and it should give them plenty of optimism for upcoming fixtures after the half term break.
“A special mention goes to Biv and Zack, who stepped up to U11 level and showed that they definitely have the potential to ensure they are going to be huge contributing factors to any future success we have at Rydal Penrhos.”
