Football: Plenty of positives from first fixture at Stonyhurst

Rydal Penrhos’ senior footballers turned in an encouraging display in their first competitive fixture of the season.

The school’s first XI made the long trip to Stonyhurst College on Saturday, January 12, and there were plenty of positives to take, especially considering this is the first time that they have lined-up together in a competitive environment.

Conditions made things difficult for both sides during the opening exchanges, but the home side got their noses in front early on before a sensational volley from Lower Sixth Form pupil Owen Reilly got Rydal Penrhos back on level terms.

Things got even better for the visitors soon after, and once again it was Owen Reilly who was the beneficiary of some neat approach play, beating the offside trap before demonstrating superb composure to slot home.

This was met by a strong response from the hosts, who capitalised on some defensive errors to gain a commanding advantage as the game progressed, and despite a late strike from skipper Iestyn Williams it was not enough to prevent a 6-3 loss.

Despite the defeat, the group acquitted themselves very well in the face of more experienced opposition, and they will look to develop their respective talents during training sessions led by teacher Darren Baker throughout the term, in addition to a series of testing fixtures.
