Old Penrhosians can now honour a legendary former Headmistress as part of the Donald Hughes Memorial Campaign for Assisted Places.

Constance Smith took on the post of Headmistress at Penrhos College in the Autumn of 1938, and was to perform her duties magnificently through both difficulties and triumphs for the next 28 years.

In 1939 she undertook the considerable task of evacuating the school to Chatsworth House for the duration of the Second World War, returning to Colwyn Bay in 1945.

Miss Smith retired in 1966, and Monica Beardsworth wrote: "It was extraordinary difficult to imagine the school without her.

“She had guided its destiny for 28 years with integrity, humanity and humour, while her scholarly approach had improved beyond measure its standard of academic achievement.

“Yet among her many great qualities, one that was undoubtedly outstanding was her unfailing care and consideration for the individual.

“Penrhos to Miss Smith was not merely a school, it was a collection of several hundred girls, each one of them individually in her care.  She rejoiced with them in their triumphs, sympathised with them in their troubles and dealt with them firmly and justly in their misdemeanors.

“She held a sure place in their hearts and in the hearts of her staff and it would be impossible to exaggerate how highly they all esteemed her."

Alumni and Development director Sarah Ritchie, said: “Constance "Connie" Smith was incredibly supportive of the girls in her care, and we are offering those who would like to honour her memory and commitment to the school to do so by making a donation to the Donald Hughes Campaign for Assisted Places in her name.

“All gifts made in this way will be used to provide financial support for pupils who would otherwise be unable to attend Rydal Penrhos.

“Gifts made in memory of Connie will be recorded separately to others, allowing us to honour her memory and forming a fitting tribute to a Headmistress who was such an integral part in the Rydal Penrhos story.”

Anyone wishing to donate in memory of Miss Smith can do so at http://www.rydalpenrhos.com/constance-smith.
