Excitement builds ahead of Rydal Penrhos' annual Speech Day

Excitement is building ahead of one of the most prominent dates on the Rydal Penrhos calendar this weekend.

The school will be hosting its annual Speech Day festivities on Saturday, May 27, where a host of exciting events have been scheduled to recognise the plethora of achievements recorded by pupils’ across all departments throughout the academic year.

Former British cycling star Denise Hampson, who attended Penrhos College, will be the special guest speaker at the event, which will also hear addresses from Head Boy Adam Sabri, Head Girl Charlotte Owen and Headmaster Simon Smith.

After quitting the track to pursue a career in business, she become a behavioural economist and worked on the British Aerospace Eurofighter Typhoon project.

Now considered an expert in the subject, Mrs Hampson moved on to delivering training, designs programmes and resources and speaks at national conferences on the subject.

She currently works and resides in Vancouver, Canada working on “stretchy pants”, which she will reveal more about during her address.

Mr Smith, said: “We are delighted that Denise will be joining us for our Speech Day, and she embodies all the elements of the education we provide here; the learning, the leading, the living and the listening.

“Without giving too much away, Denise will be speaking about how we are all designers, and that each pupil here at Rydal Penrhos is developing skills for designing a great life.”

Following the speeches and prize giving there will be refreshments available thanks to the Friends of Rydal Penrhos committee, who will be bringing their Pimms tent to New Field ahead of the Cricket clash between Rydal Dolphins and the school’s first XI.

Sixth formers will then get to spend the night at a specially organised Leavers’ Ball, which will take place at the Kinmel Manor Hotel and Spa.
