Emily scoops Michael S James IB Scholarship Cup

A Chinese boarding pupil has been honoured for her exceptional academic contribution with a special award.

Emily Li, an Upper Sixth Form pupil at the school, received the International Baccalaureate Scholarship Cup from Flt Lt Nathan Jones as the school’s annual Speech Day event, which was held on Saturday, May 26.

The cup is named in memory of former Principal Michael James, who took up the position of the newly merged school with Rydal and Penrhos College in April 1999 and was given the responsibility to effect the changes at the Rydal site.

The ambitious boarder has created an online platform for overseas students thinking of studying in either the United Kingdom or the United States of America, which enables them to find out more about what to expect and offers guidance in a number of areas in order to achieve their goal.

The prominent features of the platform include interview processes and techniques, entrance exam information, in addition to advice on living abroad and adapting to life in a different culture.

Emily is also offering English lessons to ready those using the platform further ahead of a possible education abroad, and she also revealed that thanks to the hard work of her team the business is already "turning a profit".

She is also an extremely talented mathematician who has thrived under the guidance of Rydal Penrhos’ staff, which has resulted in regional and national competition success as part of the UKMT Senior Challenge.

This also saw Emily gain a distinction in the Girls’ British Mathematical Olympiad, and also earned a place at the British Mathematical Olympiad training camp in Budapest last year.

Her seamless transition to boarding school life is a testament to her overall character and the support she has received from Edwards House matron Fiona Earle, and has set her sights on a place at the London School of Economics when she starts the next stage of her further education journey later this year.
