Rydal Penrhos’ Design and Technology department teamed up with the Royal Academy of Engineering for a special competition recently.
The Take Flight Challenge saw the school welcome Ysgol Bryn Elian, Ysgol John Bright, Ysgol Eirias, Blessed Edward Jones Roman Catholic High School, Rhyl High School and Ysgol Aberconwy for the event, which took place on Wednesday, June 27.
This was a collaborative project between the schools’ and the RAE, and each team involved had one hour to design and build a test aircraft from the basic components given.
This was followed by a testing event at the Sports Hall, and the Rydal Penrhos team of Edward Altoft, Arran Sen and Scott Thomas managed to secure the longest flight accolade as a result of their outstanding efforts throughout the challenge.
The Blessed Edward Jones team also took home an award from the showcase in the form of the Longest Flight Duration title to conclude another fantastic event hosted by department head Phil Sutton and his dedicated staff.
Deputy Head Tim Cashell, said: “This was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved and I would like to that everyone that came along and helped contribute to the Take Flight Challenge.
“It was great to see so much enthusiasm and determination on display by all teams, and well done to the Rydal Penrhos team of Ed, Arran and Scott for their excellent efforts.”
