Cricket Ones to Watch: Sam Bixby

Ahead of the new cricket season, we will be taking a look at the ones to watch across various year groups as they prepare for a busy series of upcoming fixtures in the coming weeks.

We continue the feature with Year 10 pupil Sam Bixby:

  • Name: Sam Bixby
  • Year group: Year 10
  • Pupil status: Boarding
  • House: Netherton/Wesley

The 2017 season will be fondly remembered from Sam’s viewpoint, with the boarder coming on a significant amount during the summer months.

A talented batsman, Sam also turned his hand to wicketkeeping and thanks to some excellent guidance from Head of Cricket Mike Leach and other staff at the school, he became very accomplished behind the stumps very quickly and was an assured presence for junior sides during the term.

This brought with it a pair of awards as a result of his wonderful development, with Sam winning the overall Most Improved Player of the Year honour in addition to the Year 9 Player of the Season distinction.

Sam also progressed to Rydal Penrhos’ senior XI thanks to his ongoing development, and promises to play another significant role ahead of a busy series of fixtures for the group.

The 15-year-old has been working hard throughout the winter months on progressing his game even further under the supervision of coach Dion Holden, who also works with Sam at North Wales Premier Division runners-up Menai Bridge at youth level.

Mr Leach, said: “He is not outstanding (yet!), but he is proving to be a real trier and wants to improve although I am not sure ‘keeping is where he wants to be.

“Following his experiences at first-team level, he then took this back to his peer group team and demonstrated his improved maturity and thinking about the finer details of the game and he was deservedly the Year 9 Player of the Year.”
