Cricket: First XI gear up for prestigious MCC fixture

Final preparations are being made ahead of a prestigious annual cricket contest at Rydal Penrhos.

The school’s first XI will be in action on home soil on Wednesday, May 2, where they will welcome Marylebone Cricket Club in a fixture that dates back to the 1900’s.

The New Field surface has been transformed in recent weeks for the summer term, with Rydal Penrhos offering one of the finest pitches in the region despite the recent bad weather hampering the ground staff.

A large number of young state school cricketers have been benefitting from specialist coaching thanks to the MCC’s Foundation Hub, which is situated at Rydal Penrhos and run by Menai Bridge captain Dion Holden and Director of Sport Allen Boyd.

The school will be taking on some of the MCC Hub sides later on in the term, with the first XI scheduled to compete against them on Wednesday, May 9.

Head of Cricket Mike Leach, said: “It promises to be a fantastic occasion against MCC, who are regarded as one of the finest cricketing clubs in the country with a rich tradition.

“Hopefully it will bring the best out of our young squad, who have all been working incredibly hard over the winter months to improve all aspects of their game to give them the best possible chance of having a successful season.”
