Budding musician Ethan Bytheway enhances learning at high-profile event

A budding musician at Rydal Penrhos has been honing his skills at a high-profile event during the holidays.

Ethan Bytheway, a Year 8 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, spent part of his half term break attending a special brass workshop at York University, which was led by Owen Farr.

The talented brass player has acquired extensive teaching experience at prestigious establishments such as the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Liverpool, and is also an official Besson tester, involved in the development of tenor horns while regularly touring the country raising awareness of the instrument with his lyrical tone and stunning technical precision.

Following the masterclass, which centred around the test piece ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’, Ethan then went on to perform what they had learnt, in just an hour and a half, on the main stage at The York Barbican ahead of the annual Unibrass Competition hosted by the University of York, where he brother Alex is studying Chemistry.

Director of Music Pete Williams, said: “This was a fantastic experience for Ethan and one I am sure will stand him in extremely good stead for the future.

“He has shown a tremendous work ethic since arriving at Rydal Penrhos, and has fully immersed himself in the opportunities we offer throughout the department.

“Enhancing his learning from someone with the talent of Owen Farr will undoubtedly aid his development even further.”
