Sailing: Squad performs well at RYA Youth National Championships

A host of sailing hopefuls at Rydal Penrhos took to the water in pursuit of national honours recently.

The large school contingent travelled to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the RYA Youth National Championships, which brought some challenging weather conditions for all age groups.

Zac Blomeley and Ewan Luke qualified for the Gold Fleet in the GBR 29er class and finished a creditable 17th out of 61 boats, with the brother duo of Eddie and Kevin Farrell securing fourth place in the Silver Fleet.

Sixth Former Ollie Gibson also performed well in the 29er, coming 12th in the Silver Fleet with sailing partner Tyler Green.

Lower School pupil Llion Morris added to his list of experiences in the GBR Topper Class, producing some impressive race results to finish in 20th overall.

Josh Manning and partner Lucy Hughes booked their place in the Team GB squad  in the 420 class despite the latter suffering a head injury that ended their competition early, rounding off another successful early season competition from a Rydal Penrhos perspective.

It promises to be a busy season for the RYA accredited programme, with pupils and coaching staff involved in regional, national and international competitions across the globe.

Administrator Petrina Blomeley, said: “Our RYA Training Centre is now in full swing; immensely proud to be one of few UK schools able to teach sea sailing as part of the curriculum, our outdoor education provision is for all our pupils from Year 3-8.

“We are delighted that we have so many Rydal Penrhos sailors (and instructors) represent and compete at events such as the RYA Youth Nationals, and they can all be very proud of their achievements.”
