A pair of internationally recognised athletes at Rydal Penrhos received a special award for their exploits throughout the academic year.
Reuben Bather and Zach Speakman, Year 11 pupils at the school, were presented with the Headmistress’ Award at the school’s annual Sports Awards Dinner prior to the half term break.
The award is for aspiring athletes that have achieved success on the national stage at U16 or U18 level, with the duo adding to their exceptional list of recent achievements in the disciplines of Golf and Swimming.
Welsh youth international golfer and scratch handicapper Reuben has further enhanced his growing reputation as one of the brightest young prospects on the continent thanks to a host of achievements, which included the ISGA Northern Open Championship and a Cardigan Trophy victory with the Welsh U18 squad.
He is ranked nine in the European U16 category and was appointed junior captain at Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno for the second consecutive year.
Sports scholar Zach has been in tremendous form in the pool of late, with the pupil developing significantly both with Rydal Penrhos’ athletic development programme and with Swim Wales squad.
This culminated in an outstanding performance at the recent Easter Nationals, which saw Zach surge up the UK rankings after securing three gold medals at the showcase.
Senior School Head Sally Ann Harding, who dished out the prizes, said: “Reuben and Zach have represented Rydal Penrhos in an enormously positive way thanks to their Golf and Swimming efforts internationally, and they are thoroughly deserving of this award.”
