Bragging rights were secured by Rydal Penrhos’ Upper Sixth Form pupils in their annual football match against the staff.
The highly anticipated Staff vs Leavers’ clash took place at the home of Tier Two North side Colwyn Bay on Friday, May 17, and after a competitive affair, it was the Year 13 contingent that emerged victorious 3-1.
An even opening to the contest saw both sides enjoy good periods of possession, with the leavers’ breaking the deadlock shortly after the half hour mark when Joe Gardener finished well after a period of pressure.
Things got even better for the Year 13 group soon after when Gardener secured his second of the evening with a free kick that somehow found its way past Nick Thomas-Young.
This provoked a strong response from the staff, who got themselves back into the game when a Paul Sanders delivery was diverted into his own net by Bohdan Velychko.
Goalkeeper Phillip Novak had to be at his best to deny a long-range effort from Dean Jones following the restart, with Andy Thomas also coming within inches of a leveller when he flashed a header narrowly wide.
The staff were made to pay for their inefficiency in front of goal in the closing stages when Josh Thomas got the better of a challenge with stopper Darren Baker before slotting into an empty net to restore the leavers’ two-goal cushion and round off the scoring.
Year 13 pupil and skipper Tomos Davies lifted the trophy on behalf of his side following the game, which is the first time the leavers’ have won the contest since 2016.
