Football: End of season award winners announced

A number of talented footballers were recognised for their fine efforts throughout the season at one of the most prominent dates on the sporting calendar.

The worthy recipients received their respective distinctions at the school’s annual Sports Awards Dinner prior to the half term break, with ex-professional rugby player and former pupil Andrew Fenby on hand to dish out the prizes in his role as special guest.

Welsh youth cricket international Owen Reilly proved there was more than one string to his bow with a series of exceptional displays throughout the season, which included an incredible volley in their fixture at Stonyhurst College.

This resulted in Owen receiving the Player of the Year honour as a result of his effort, with the Lower Sixth Form pupil also awarded with half colours alongside skipper and midfield talisman Iestyn Williams.

Bodhan Velychko’s outstanding progression throughout training sessions and competitive matches saw him secure the Most Improved Player of the Year Award to round off the presentation from a footballing perspective.

Coach and Maths teacher Darren Baker, said: “This year saw our most comprehensive football fixture list to, which started with much optimism after an autumn term of training with players finding their position and learning their positions.

“With a small squad, the boys had to be flexible in their approach and do jobs they weren’t always comfortable with, to their credit, they were always willing to embrace the challenge, and learn from their outcomes.

“What was most pleasing to see over the season was the improvement from many players, their will to be coached and take on instructions.

“Well done to everyone involved and I hope to see the Year 12s returning with fire in their bellies wanting to make further leaps forward in the 2020 campaign.”
